Henry R. Rittenberg, a native of Libau, Latvia, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and continued to live and work in Philadelphia and New York for the majority of his career. Following his 1904 traveling scholarship, Rittenberg attended the BavarianAcademy in Munich and the Shinnecock Summer School, where he worked under celebrated American artist William Merritt Chase. He earned membership in the National Academy in 1927 and exhibited his portraits and still lifes for decades at the annual shows of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Corcoran Gallery, and the National Academy of Design. Currently, examples of Rittenberg's work are included in the collections of museums across the United States, including the Parrish Art Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the New York Historical Society.
