Born in Valencia, Spain in 1845, 19th century impressionist Vicente García de Paredes studied at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia, in Madrid where he copied works of the masters in the Prado Museum, and later in Rome on a scholarship awarded from the city of Madrid. De Paredes made his debut in 1879 at an exhibition in Valencia where he won a bronze medal. He later exhibited at the Paris Salons and won another award at the Paris World's Fair in 1900.

In 1884, de Paredes moved to Paris where he became famous for his masterful depictions of aristocratic scenes. His historical scenes were so popular that they were often made into color engravings and many works were reproduced in popular French magazines.
