Carl Zimmerman
American (1900-1985)
Carl Zimmerman, painter, instructor and muralist, was born in Indianapolis in 1900. Zimmerman studied under the Hoosier Group artist Otto Stark at the John Herron Art Institute. He left Indianapolis for Chicago in 1919 to study teaching at the American Academy of Art. In 1924, Zimmerman enrolled in the Cincinatti Art Academy. He did illustration work on weekends while studying under Reginald Grooms, John E. Weis and Herman Wessel. He received his first mural commission in 1927. During his career, Zimmerman participated in major exhibitions in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis. His murals include work at the Cathedral of St. Monica, Cincinnati, Saints Peter and Paul’s Church, Norwood, Ohio, and at the Cincinnati Club. Zimmerman was also a leading Professor at the Cincinnati Art Academy from the 1940s to 1960.
