William B. van Ingen
American (1858-1955)
Mural painter and stained glass artist William van Ingen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Van Ingen acquired his initial artistic training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, where he studied with Thomas Eakins. He also apprenticed under noted stained glass artists John La Farge and Lewis Tiffany. During his career, van Ingen held membership in the Architecture League, the Mural Painters Association, the Lotus Club, Arts Club of Philadelphia and the Artists Fund Society, and exhibited his works at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. Van Ingen was well-known for his mural paintings, particularly for works he did for the Library of Congress, the US Mint in Philadelphia and the Panama Canal Authority.
