John O. Todahl
American (b. 1884)
John Todahl was born in Crookeston, Minnesota in 1884, though most of his life was spent in Milford, Connecticut. As a young artist he did receive formal training, and was part of the American Guild of Authors League. Todahl’s professional career was made up largely of illustrative commissions from popular magazines of the time, such as Scribners, Red Cross Magazine and Boy’s Life Magazine. Several of his illustrations are still in print as posters to this day.
Milford, Connecticut itself also had a large effect on his artwork. The weathered houses on the water and the boat yards were all a part of the nautical environment that inspired Todahl and his artwork. His style has been described as “painterly,” although there is an obvious and delicate attention to detail and design as well.
