Addison Thomas Millar

American (1860-1913)

Born in Ohio in 1860, Millar exhibited an early artistic talent, winning landscape competitions sponsored by The Youth’s Companion for three years in a row during his teenage years. Millar settled in New York City in 1883, where he studied painting and etching at the Arts Student League before entering the Shinnecok School, conducted by noted landscape artist William Merritt Chase.  After setting up a studio in Paris in 1894, Millar spent time painting in Spain and Holland. Millar eventually returned to New York, where he continued to exhibit his paintings and etchings.

Millar exhibited his work in the Paris Salons, as well as at the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Boston Art Club, and was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Silvermine Group of Artists. His works can be found in the collections of the Rhode Island School of Design, the New York Public Library, the Detroit Museum of Art and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
