Maud Briggs Knowlton
American (1870-1956)
American painter, etcher, and educator Maud Briggs Knowlton (1870-1956) was born in Penacook, New Hampshire and became deeply involved in the arts communities of both New Hampshire and Maine while also participating in exhibitions in New York and Boston. She worked under Rhoda Holmes Nicholls as a student and later gained membership in the Society of New Hampshire Artists and the New Hampshire League of Arts and Crafts. Knowlton participated in the exhibitions of the New York Watercolor Club and the Boston Art Club, where she showed her works from 1895 until 1903. In addition to her efforts as a painter, she served as director of the Currier Art Gallery in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1929 until 1946 and also acted as president of the art department of the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences.
