Earl Horter
American (1881-1940)
Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Horter was a self-taught artist who began his career working in New York City at an advertising agency as a draftsman. Horter had his first one-man show in 1916, and also exhibited at the Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Print Club, and at the Corcoran Biennials from 1935 to 1939. Horter became well known for his etchings, illustrations and paintings. He also amassed an important collection of modernist and cubist art, which included works by Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, Brancusi and others, and was a teacher in Philadelphia at the Stella Elkins School of the Art, the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and the Graphic Sketch Club.
