Augustus Daggy
American (1858-1942)
Augustus Daggy was born in Paris, Illinois, in 1858, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where his work was later exhibited in annual shows from 1879 to 1887. In the mid 1890s, Daggy travelled to Europe and painted at least once at Concarneau, a town in Brittany near the artist’s colony in Pont Aven. After returning to the United States, he continued to paint landscapes along the East Coast. Beginning in 1913, Daggy lived in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he joined the sculptor Solon Borglund in forming the Silvermine Guild of Artists, which included not only painters, sculptors, and illustrators, but musical, literary, and dramatic artists as well. Daggy was a member of the Society of Independent Artists.
