Maria Brooks
American (1837-1913)
Born in Staines, England in 1837, painter Maria Brooks studied at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools of Arts in London. Best known for her portrait, genre and landscape paintings, Brooks established a studio in Montreal in 1881, worked and painted in Quebec City in 1886, and left Canada for the United States where she established a studio in New York at the turn of the century.
Brooks was a member of the American Watercolour Society, Society of British Artists and Art Association of Montreal. She exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Brooklyn Art Association, Boston Art Club and Ontario Society of Artists, among others.
