Einar Wegener was born in Vejle, Denmark in 1882. Wegener studied art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and in 1907 won Denmark's Neuhausens prize. He exhibited at Kunstnernes Efteraarsudstilling, as well as at the Vejle Art Museum. His wife, Gerda, was also an artist. One day when her model was running late, Gerda asked Wegener to pose for her.  Wegener became her regular model thereafter and eventually took the name Lili Elbe. The couple travelled throughout Italy and France before settling in Paris in 1912. In 1924 Wegener's work, which included landscapes, interior scenes, still lifes and portraits, was shown in Paris at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Independants.  A novel loosely inspired by her life, The Danish Girl, was made into a film in 2015.
