Henry Kallem was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1912. His first exposure to art was through his father, artist Morris Kallem. Later Henry studied art at the National Academy of Design and the Hans Hofmann School. He exhibited extensively during his career, including at the Carnegie Institute, four biennial exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., a solo show at the Opportunity Gallery in New York City in 1948, the National Academy of Design, the 1939 WorldÃs Fair in New York, and repeatedly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art Annual between 1936 and 1958. At the Pepsi-Cola exhibition in 1947, Kallem won first prize for his entry, ìCountry Tenement,î after which Life magazine wrote an article about modern art. KallemÃs paintings can be found at museums, galleries, universities, and private collections throughout the United States. His works are owned by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Newark Museum in New Jersey, the Chrysler Museum, the Colby College Museum, the Matatuck Museum, Lehigh University, and the University of Massachusetts.
