Born in New York City in 1885, painter, etcher and lithographer Hortense Ferne studied at the Art Students League in New York, National Academy of Design and at Columbia University. Ferne was a student of Hugh Breckenridge, Charles Webster Hawthorne and William Merritt Chase. Ferne was a member of the American Watercolor Society, Painters in Watercolor, North Shore Art Association, Salons of America, Society of Independent Artists, National Association of Women Artists, Painters, Sculptors, Society of American Etchers and Washington DC Watercolor Society. In addition to exhibiting in numerous galleries, Ferne exhibited her work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Association of Women Artists, Painters, Sculptors, Salons of America, North Shore Association, Society of Independent Artists, The Woodcut Society and at the Society of Washington DC Artists.
Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
