Alfred R. Nunamaker was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1915 and moved to Center Bridge, Pennsylvania, in 1923. When he was 12 he began painting with his father, the Impressionist artist, Kenneth Nunamaker, and first exhibited two years later at Phillips' Mill Community Association. Influenced by the New Hope impressionists, Nunamaker specialized in landscapes and seascapes. Following a two-year apprenticeship with George Sotter in his stained glass studio in Holicong, Pennsylvania, he moved to Philadelphia where he worked with his father as a commercial artist. In the 1950s he spent time on Monhegan Island painting the village and island views.
