Pola Gauguin was born in Paris in 1883, the fifth of Paul Gauguin's children. In addition to painting and printmaking, Gauguin was an art critic and scholar. Gauguin moved to Copenhagen in 1884 with his family.  His father, Paul Gauguin, returned to Paris the following year. Pola Gauguin entered the Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole in 1905 and was an assistant to the architects, Hermann Baagoe Storck and Anton Rosen from 1906 to 1909. He attended the art exhibitions at Kunstnernes Efterarsudstilling in Copenhagen and in 1913 at Societe des Artistes Independants in Paris. He debuted as an artist at Blomqvist Kunsthandel and Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo in 1913 and at the Oslo Autumn Exhibition in 1914. He started an art school in Oslo which he ran until 1924. He also wrote several books, including biographies of Edvard Munch, Christian Krohg and Ludvig Karsten.

Gaugin's works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Norway, the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim and the Stenersen Museum in Oslo.
