Marine painter, etcher and photographer Eric Hudson was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1864. Hudson became one of the long-time members of the artist colony on Monhegan Island, and was close friends with Monhegan artists Robert Henri, Sears Gallagher and Frederick Waugh. He first visited the island in 1897 and established a studio there the next year. Hudson also painted in the Cape Ann area throughout his life.

Hudson studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and at the Academie Julian in Paris in the early 1880s. He was a member of the North Shore Art Association, the Salmagundi Club, the Rockport Art Association and the Boston Art Club. His works were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the North Shore Art Association, the Natinoal Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and many others. The Portland Museum of Art, the Monhegan Museum and the Farnsworth Museum all have works by Hudson in their permanent collections.
