Friedrich August Zimmermann

Painter and lithographer Friedrich August Zimmermann was born in Rosswein, Saxony in Germany on August 10, 1805. He attended the Dresden Academy, and in 1830 he was given funds by the King to study manufacturing in Munich and Vienna. Zimmermann then returned to Dresden in the winter of 1832 and continued his education at the Aktsaal Academy. In 1834 Zimmermann worked with a master lithographer in Dresden, producing prints for five volumes titled, ìSaxonia.î Subjects of these prints included dancers, musicians, and reproductions of works by various artists. After this experience, Zimmermann traveled to Italy in order to pursue his artistic studies and then returned home to Dresden. He died in Dresden on April 9, 1876.
