John White
Scottish (1851-1933)
John White, R.I. was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, portraits and rustic genre subjects in oil and watercolor. White was born in 1851 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and in 1856 he immigrated with his family to Australia. From 1873-79 he returned to study at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools, where in 1875 he won the Keith Prize for Design. In 1882 White was elected to full membership at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Coloures, as well as the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. White exhibited extensively at the Fine Arts Society, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and at the Royal Academy. Among the many watercolors White exhibited at the Royal Academy were ìThe Village Beautyî in 1889 and ìThe Evening Hourî in 1897. Paintings of John White, R.I. are in the collection of the Exeter Museum.
