Catherine Watkins
American (1861-1947)
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1861, Catherine Watkins was a landscape painter, lecturer and writer. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, in Paris under Simon, Menard, Miller, and Dauchez; with Frank Brangwyn in London and Joaquin Sorolla in Madrid. Watkins worked in Woodstock, New York, before moving to Los Angeles in 1921. She lived in San Francisco for a few years around 1930 and then returned to Los Angeles. She gave lectures which included such titles as “Adventures in North China,” “Idling in Japan,” and “Studio Life in Paris.” She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters & Sculptors and the American Women’s Art Association (Paris). She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago and Corcoran Gallery Biennial.
