Arthur Wardle
British (1864-1949)
Well regarded as an animal painter, Wardle was especially known for his portraits of terriers. Wardle exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy as a teenager, and from 1880 through 1935 showed over 100 works at the Academy. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street and the New Watercolor Society. Wardle lived in London, and often painted the animals at the London Zoo; his works of the exotic, large tigers, leopards and lions resulted in many acclaimed depictions. He was also an illustrator for Rawdon Lee’s canine dictionaries.
