Abraham Walkowitz

American (1880-1965)

Abraham Walkowitz came to New York City in 1889 from Siberia, Russia. Walkowitz studied at Cooper Union, the New York City Education Alliance, the National Academy of Design, and in Paris at the Academie Julian. An early American modernist artist, Walkowitz was a painter, etcher, graphic artist and illustrator, who became well entrenched in the art scene in New York City, meeting Stieglitz in 1911 and becoming a fixture at his gallery. Walkowitz was a member of the American Artists Congress, the American Society of Painters and Guilders, and served as Director and Vice President of the Society of Independent Artists. Walkowitz’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Whitney Museum of American Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art and many other public institutions.
