Henry Harold Vickers
(1851-1919)
A painter, draftsman and educator. Henry Harold Vickers was born in 1851 in Dudley, Worcestershire, England. His grandfather, Alfred H. Vickers Sr.,and uncle, Alfred G. Vickers, were also artists. Vickers studied painting at the Birmingham and Midland Institute, anatomy at Queen’s College and landscape painting under Frederick Henry Henshaw (British, 1807-1891), also in Birmingham. He immigrated to Ottawa, Ontario, around 1881. In Ottawa, Vickers taught advanced drawing and painting. He exhibited at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition in 1897 and 1901 An oil painter, Vickers’ primary subjects were rural scenes with sheep and cattle. His works areĀ in the permanent collections of the Museum London in London, Ontario, Canada, the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton, and the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound, Ontario.
