Jacob van Strij

Dutch (1756-1815)

Born in Dordrecht, Holland in 1756, painter, printmaker and draftsman Jacob van Strij took his first painting lessons from his father, Leendert van Strij. Van Strij studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium and later under the tutelage of Antwerp history painter, Andreas Lens. He was a member of the Pictura Drawing Society and Dordrecht Guild of St. Luke. Van Strij became known as an excellent landscape painter in the spirit of his fellow townsman, Aelbert Cuyp.

Van Strij’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Dordrechts Museum, Holland; Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague; Harvard University Art Museums, Massachusetts; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom and in the Teylers Museum, Netherlands, among others.
