Ludwig Eduard Valenta was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1882. In the tradition of the 19th century German and Austrian painters, Valenta specialized in warmly lit interior scenes and detailed still lifes. He would often paint gentlemen or scholars seated at a table reading or engaged in a game of chess surrounded by books and other objects of learning.
