Mary Taylor
American (1895-1970)
Born in Iowa in 1895, Taylor studied art at IowaUniversity, as well as at the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. While at the NationalAcademy, she received a Tiffany Foundation award, and met a fellow student, artist Andrew Winter, who became her husband. Taylor exhibited at the NationalAcademy, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Portland Museum of Art. In 1959, the FarnsworthMuseum in Rockland organized a one-man show of her work.
Taylor and Winter were frequent summer visitors to MonheganIsland starting in the 1930s, and became year-round residents in 1942. Throughout her paintings, Taylor explored the changing quality of the Monhegan light.
