Marc Sterling
French (1895-1976)
Marc Sterling was born in Pryluky, Ukraine, in 1895. In 1909 he studied art at the Odesa Art College and in the early 1920s studied under Vladmir Tatlin at the Vkhoutemas and with Vladmir Mayakovsky. In 1922 he moved to Berlin and then in 1923 to Paris where he joined the École de Paris, a circle of international avant-garde artists, including Juan Gris, Jean Metzinger, Fernand Léger, and Amadee Ozenfant. He attended the Montparnasse cafés and workshops, as well as “La Ruche.” Sterling exhibited regularly in galleries and salons.
Sterling’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Pompidou, Museum of Tel Aviv and the National Library of France, as well as private collections around the world.
