Benjamin Stahl

American (1910-1987)

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1910, artist, illustrator and author Benjamin Stahl studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, American Academy of Art, Art Student’s League of New York, Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute and various universities. Stahl was a founding faculty member of the Famous Artists School in Westport, CT.

Stahl exhibited his paintings in galleries throughout the country and in the Carnegie Museum of Art. His paintings and illustrations appeared in a variety of publications including American Artist, The Chicago Tribune Magazine, Esquire, Women’s Home Companion, Cosmopolitan and in nearly 750 issues of The Saturday Evening Post. Stahl’s commissions included the depiction of the fourteen Stations of the Cross for the Catholic Bible and Catholic Press in Chicago in 1955. Well admired by fellow illustrator, Norman Rockwell, Stahl was elected to the Society of Illustrator’s Hall of Fame in 1979.
