Gregory Smith
American (1880-1961)
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Smith began staying in Old Lyme, Connecticut in 1910, becoming part of the group of American Impressionist artists who gathered at the Griswold Boarding House in the early part of the century. Smith and his wife built a house and a studio in Old Lyme, although unfortunately, in 1925, a fire destroyed the studio and many of Smith’s paintings. However, Smith remained in Old Lyme until his detail in 1961, continuing to showcase the beauty of Old Lyme and the surrounding area.
Smith studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was a member of the Lyme Art Association, where he served as president from 1934 to 1958. Smith participated in many exhibitions during his career, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Corcoran Gallery Biennial in 1916, and numerous exhibits with the Lyme Art Association.
