Anton Schutz

American (1894-1977)

Born in Berndorf, Germany in 1894, printmaker and etcher Anton Schutz studied at the University of Munich and Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts under Groeber and Peter von Halm.  The artist emigrated to New York from Germany at the end of World War I and attended the Art Students League under Joseph Pennell. In New York, Schutz became known for his portrayals of the architecture and city life of Manhattan and Brooklyn. He also traveled and sketched scenes throughout Berlin, Paris, London and San Francisco.

Schutz was the founder of the New York Graphic Society and a member of the American Federation of Arts, Brooklyn Society of Etchers and Chicago Society of Etchers. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Library of Congress, Cleveland Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Uffizi Gallery in Florence and at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
