Nikol Schattenstein
American (1877-1954)
Born in Poniemon, Lithuania in 1877, portrait, figure and genre painter Nikol Schattenstein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and immigrated to the United States in 1939. Schattenstein was a member of the Salons of America and Society of Independent Artists. The recipient of numerous awards, he received the Prix de Rome twice enabling him to live and study in Rome for several years. In 1916, Austrian Emperor Franz Josef granted Schattenstein with the Knight Cross of the Franz Josef Order in recognition of his artistic merit.
Schattenstein exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, Society of Independent Artists, Salons of America and in many New York galleries including Kingore Galleries, Duveen-Graham, Schoneman and French & Company. His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Museum, Krakow, Poland; Army Museum, Vienna; New York University; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art and in the Supreme Court of Raleigh, North Carolina.
