Antonio Rose
German (1828-1911)
Julius Karl Rose was a 19th century German painter who worked under the pseudonyms of Georg Carre and Antonio Rose. Rose was born in a small town just outside of Dresden and studied painting under Hummer. He exhibited his landscapes at a number of venues including the National Academy of Design in 1882 and various shows in London, Cologne, Munich, Vienna and New York. Rose is best known for his awesome monumental landscapes which capture rugged Alpine ranges and dramatic Norwegian fjords. The motif of “man amongst nature” is frequently found in Rose’s work, whether idealized scenes of travelers crossing mountain cataracts, or wave-rocked ships fighting against ocean storms.
