Arthur Powell
American (1864-1956)
Painter Arthur James Emery Powell was born in Vanwert, Ohio in 1864. He received his artistic training at the San Francisco School of Design and the Louis School of Fine Art, as well as studying at the Academie Julian in Paris. He was active in numerous artistic organizations, earning membership to the National Academy in 1937 as well as being a member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Paris Art Association, the Artists Fund Society, the Allied Artists of American, the National Arts Club, the New York Watercolor Club, the Kent Art Association, and the Dutchess County Art Association. During his career he exhibited extensively winning prizes and medals at well-known venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Salmagundi Club, the Corcoran Gallery, the Allied Artists of America, the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago. PowellÃs works are housed in private, public, and corporate collections across the United States including the Milwaukee Art Institute, the Boise Library, the National Arts Club (NYC), the Raydon Gallery in New York City, murals at the Methodist Church and St. James Church in Dover Plains, New York, and Bowen Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
