William J. Potter
American (1883-1964)
Born in Bellafonte, Pennsylvania in 1883, modernist painter and teacher William J. Potter studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and under Walter Sickert in London. Potter was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, New England Society of Artists and Salmagundi Club. He taught at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado.
Potter exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy Annual, Salons of America, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, Allied Artists of America and at the Art Institute of Chicago. Potter’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Hispanic Museum, Memorial Art Museum, Herron Art Institute, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Cincinnati Art Museum, Museum Roen in France and at the Museum Nacionale d’el Arte Modero in Spain.
