Carl Peters

American (1897-1980)

Plein air painter and muralist Carl Peters was born in Rochester, New York in 1897. He studied in Woodstock, New York with Charles Rosen, John Carlson and Harry Leith-Ross, as well as at the Art Students League and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Peters was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Springfield Art Association, Rockport Art Association, Woodstock Art Association and the Genesee Group, a group of artists from the Genesee, NY area. Peters exhibited extensively throughout his career, including at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery and the Rockport Art Association, among others.

While still in his early 20s, Peters established a pattern that remained unchanged for most of his life, wintering in Fairport, New York and summering in Rockport, Massachusetts. During his lifetime, he spent almost sixty summers on Cape Ann, developing lifelong friendships with Rockport artists Charles and Emile Gruppe.
