Robert Hogg Nisbet
British (1879-1961)
Painter, etcher, and printmaker Robert Hogg Nisbet (1879-1961) was born in Providence, Rhode Island and began attending the Rhode Island School of Design at the age of eight. He continued his studies at the Art Students League under noted teachers Henry Snell and Frank DuMond and later worked in Europe, subsequently returning to the United States to settle in South Kent, Connecticut. Nisbet earned full membership in the prestigious National Academy in 1928 and garnered three prizes at the AcademyÃs annual exhibitions. In addition to his efforts as a painter and printmaker, Nisbet worked as a professor at Brown University, served as president of the Art Students League, and helped to establish the Society of American Etchers. Paintings by Nisbet are currently included in the permanent collections of such institutions as the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University, and the National Library in Paris.
