Albert Neuhuys

Dutch (1844-1914)

Born in Utrecht, Holland in 1844, figure and genre painter Albert Neuhuys studied at the Municipal Drawing School and worked under lithographer Van de Weyer. He later received a royal stipend to study at the Antwerp Academy under J. G. Aregtanger.  In 1872, Neuhuys moved to Amsterdam where he met Jozef Israels, Anton Mauve and Jacob and Matthijs Maris. Increasing urbanization around The Hague forced Neuhuys and his Hague School colleagues to look further afield for their subjects. Neuhuys settled in Laren, where he founded the Laren School.

Neuhuys participated in numerous exhibitions around the world and was the recipient of many medals and prizes in Paris, Munich, Chicago, Vienna, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Budapest and Amsterdam. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Museum of Art, Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis, The Mesdag Collection in Amsterdam and National Galleries of Scotland.
