Neil Reid Mitchill
American (1858-1934)
Known primarily as a marine painter, Neil Reed Mitchill was born in New York City in 1858, moving to Connecticut in the 1890s and becoming the first resident artist of Westport. Mitchill studied at the National Academy of Design and exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1881 to 1888; the Brooklyn Art Association in 1886; the Annual Exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1890 and 1898; the Boston Art Club in 1891; and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1907. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Algonquin Club in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
