Gordon Benjamin Mess
American (1900-1959)
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1900, impressionist landscape and maritime painter Gordon Benjamin Mess studied at the John Herron Art Institute under Randolph Coats and at the Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts with Gaston Balande, Andre Strauss and Jean Despujois. Mess also studied with Anthony Thieme in Rockport and Emile Gruppe in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Mess exhibited at the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Art Club, Indiana University, Richmond Art Gallery, Herron Art Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and Palace of Fontainebleau, France. He was a member of the Indiana Art Club, Brown County Art Guild, Indiana Federal Art Club, Hoosier Gallery Association and Association of Fontainebleau. Mess’s works are held in the permanent collection of the Richmond Art Gallery.
