Tom McCobb

American (b. 1930)

Artist Tom McCobb was born in 1930 in Colombia, South America and moved with his parents to the Far East in 1934. He returned to the United States in 1937, settling in Connecticut. Showing an early interest in art, McCobb studied painting and drawing with Harold Wolcott in Southport, Connecticut, and also studied paintings at the Rhode Island School of Design and National Academy of Design.. For the past twenty years, Tom McCobb has painted, lectured, taught, and conducted workshops and critiques from Maine to Florida with occasional trips to Arizona, New Mexico and California. His paintings appear in private and corporate collections in the USA, Canada, England, Holland, Germany and Japan. He continues to participate in one man and group exhibitions and has been the recipient of several awards. Most of his time is now devoted to painting, with a few private workshops and summer classes at the Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta, Maine.

McCobb’s painting style has been characterized as “expressive representationalism.” Strong contrasts in light, color and form dominate the artist’s work creating a unique vision which McCobb pursues with a noted vitality. The busy harbors at Bremen, Friendship and South Bristol, the rugged topography, the calm and storm of the sea, the dawn and sunset, the warmth of home and the comfort of familiar things create the world which the artist communicates to his viewers. When Fairfield Porter said his painting was his “connection between himself and everything,” he spoke of many artists. By looking at a painting by Tom McCobb, one gets a glimpse of this artist and his world.
