Sanford Ballad Dole Low
American (1905-1964)
Low had a varied career as painter, educator, Director of the Art Museum of New Britain, Connecticut, block printer, lecturer and designer. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Low moved to the East Coast, settled in Connecticut and studied under Philip Hale, Homer Clark and others. He was a member of the New York Watercolor Club, the New Britain Art League, the Connecticut Art Association, the Salmagundi Club and the Springfield Art League. Low exhibited extensively throughout Connecticut from 1933-1956. His works can be found in both public and private institutions, including the Springfield Museum of Fine Art, the Avery Memorial, Hartford, Connecticut and the Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard University. As well as being Director of the Art Museum of New Britain, Low was a teacher at the New Britain Art League and the Loomis and Chaffee Schools in Windsor, Connecticut.
