Edward Chalmers Leavitt
American (1842-1904)
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1842, realist painter Edward Chalmers Leavitt studied under prominent still life painter James Morgan Lewin. Leavitt was a member of the Boston and Providence Art Clubs and Providence Press Club, and exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Vose Galleries, Boston Art Club and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Admired for the tangible qualities of his work, Leavitt was extremely prolific, producing more than 1,000 paintings during his lifetime.
Leavitt’s works are held in the collections of the Brandywine River Museum, Rhode Island, Cahoon Museum of American Art, Massachusetts and Cummer Museum of Art, Florida.
