John Laurent
American (1921-2005)
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Laurent studied at Syracuse University as well as in Paris in 1948-49 at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere before receiving his masters at Indiana University in 1954. Laurent had many ties to Maine, as his father, sculptor Robert Laurent, ran the Ogunquit School of Painting and Scultpure in Perkins Cove in the 1940s and 50s. Laurent himself taught painting at the school from 1946-60, and took over the school after his father died. Laurent also taught art at the University of New Hampshire, beginning in 1954.
Laurent exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Corocan Gallery biennial in 1955, Ogunquit Art Museum, Currier Gallery in Manchester, New Hampshire and the Whitney Museum of American; his works are in the collections of De Cordova Museum, Massachusetts and Exeter (NH) Academy, among others.
