Walter Lansil
American (1846-1925)
Born in Bangor, Maine in 1846, painter and etcher Walter Lansil was best known for his marine and coastal paintings of New England and Venice, Italy. Lansil studied in Bangor with J.P. Hardy as well as at the Academie Julian in Paris from 1880-82. Upon his return from Europe, Lansil settled in Boston, and he traveled from Rockport to Monhegan to paint throughout this lifetime. He also returned many times to Venice to paint and etch.
Lansil was a member of the Bangor Art Association and the Boston Art Club. He exhibited his works at the Boston Art Club from 1874-1909, as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the National Academy of Design in New York City from 1878-1892. Lansil is represented in the permanent collection at Smith College and the McMullen Museum of Art collection at Boston College holds one of his paintings of the tall ships.
