William Joy
British (1803-1867)
British artist William Joy was born in Yarmouth, England in 1803. With his broth, John, Joy became an accomplished marine artist, studying at the Wright’s Academy, Yarmouth. In 1832, the brothers moved to Portsmouth, where they began work as draftsmen for the government. The two often collaborated on their marine drawings. Later, the brothers Joy relocated to London, where William exhibited at the Royal Academy. Joy also participated in several special exhibitions of paintings by Norwich School artists. Works by William Joy are part of the permanent collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, among others.
