Reuben Le Grande Johnston
American (1850-1918)
Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Reuben Le Grande Johnston lived in both New York City and WashingtonDC where he taught at the Art Students League of Washington DC in the early 1890s. He was primarily a self-taught artist, although he did take several classes in Baltimore from Adalbert Volck. Johnston traveled widely including to Morocco, France, Spain, England, and Tangiers and was a member of the Society of Washington Artists. Exhibition venues include the Corcoran Gallery, the National Academy of Design, and the Royal Academy of London.
Johnston’s signature works were landscapes with animals.
