John Bradley Hudson
American (1832-1903)
John Bradley Hudson was born in 1832 in Portland, Maine and trained under painter Charles Octavius Cole around 1850. Although mostly known for his landscapes, Hudson was also an “ornamental” painter, painting coaches, signs, fire buckets and fireplace boards. He was also part of the group who painted up in the White Mountains during the late 18th century. At that time Hudson wrote a book, a diary which he illustrated, published in 1859 under the title “Journey to the White Mountains.” Hudson’s work was shown at the Boston Athenaeum during his lifetime. Works of his are also currently in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Colby College Museum of Art.
