Irene Holzer-Weineck

Austrian (1888-1965)

Irene Hölzer-Weineck was born in Prague in 1888 and later worked as a painter primarily in Vienna. After artistic training with the Czech painter Vojtech Hynais, Hölzer-Weineck studied at the Prague Academy of Arts and Crafts and took lessons with the German painter Lothar von Kunowski in Berlin. Later she studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts as well as at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. After a one-year stay in China, she exhibited again in Vienna and was a committee member of the Vereinigung Bildender KünstlerInnen Österreichs and the Zentralverband Bildender Künstler. Between 1918 and 1953 she exhibited several times at the Vienna Secession. In 1930 she was presented with the City of Vienna’s Honorary Award. Her works were shown in public collections and museums in Austria as well as in other countries. In the interwar period she painted portraits of many important Austrian personalities. Known as a portrait painter with an expressive, colorful style, she also created impressive landscape paintings, still lifes, etchings and bookplates.
