Laura Coombs Hills
American (1859-1952)
Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1859, floral and miniature painter Laura Coombs Hills studied at the Cowles Art School and New York Art Students League under Helen Knowlton.
Hills exhibited and was awarded prizes at the Paris Exposition, Pan-American Exposition, St. Louis Exposition, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Society of Washington Artists, American Society of Miniature Painters, Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters and the Charleston Exhibition. Hills also exhibited her work at the Art Institute of Chicago, Vose Galleries in Boston and Paris Salons.
Hills founded the American Society of Miniature Painters and was a member of the Society of American Artists, Boston Guild of Artists, National St. Louis Academy, Boston Watercolor Club, Copley Society and Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters.
Hills’ works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Harvard University Art Museums; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Mint Museum in Charlotte.
