Arthur J. Hammond
American (1875 - 1947)
Born in Connecticut in 1875, Hammond studied in Boston with Eric Pape, as well as with Charles Woodbury and George Loftus Noyes. While primarily based on the East Coast, Hammond traveled frequently to the Monterey Peninsula in California, and also spent several years in Europe, where he studied at the Academie Julie and painted along the Cornish coast. During the 1930s, Hammond lived in New Mexico, capturing the southwestern landscape.
Hammond was a member of the Lynn Art Club, the Rockport Art Association, the North Shore Art Association, Connecticut Academy of Fine Art and St. Ives Art Club in England. His works were exhibited at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art in 1919 and at the National Academy of Design. Works by Hammond were also part of the 1998 exhibition of “Charles H. Woodbury and His Students” at the Ogunquit, Maine Museum of American Art.
