Chenoweth Hall

American (1908-1999)

Although Chenoweth Hall was born in Albany, New York, much of her life was spent in Maine. A writer, painter and sculptor, Hall became best known for her paintings of the Maine landscape, and generated a highly regarded body of work which showed the influences of John Marin and Marsden Hartley in their spontaneity and design.

Hall also established herself as a noted educator of the arts. In the late 1960’s she began teaching at the University of Maine at Machias where she held several positions including Artist-In-Residence, Associate Professor of Art, and Chairman of Cultural Affair Activities.
